Nancy Seaver is the other half of the Seaver Vineyards partnership and, after over 50 years of marriage, is confident in saying she’s the brains behind the operation. Once wearing all the administrative hats Seaver Vineyards called for, Nancy built our sales and marketing from the ground up. She learned in realtime how to run a small business and if you've been a member since the first days of Seaver Vineyards, you probably corresponded with Nancy over email or found yourself on the phone with her if you called us for information. Also an avid photographer, Nancy took nearly all of the photos we now use on our website. She is a life-long accomplished gardener in her own right as well, so growing grapes is a natural fit, and Nancy can often be found in her beautiful terraced flower gardens or out in the vineyard with clippers in hand.
Thomas Brown Winemaker
In 2002, when it was time to hire a winemaker, the Seavers received recommendations for all of the top winemakers in the Valley at the time, and even met with a few. Then one night over dinner, Tom and Nancy had a bottle of wine that made an impression. Looking at the back label they read the name of a winemaker neither had heard of before; Thomas Brown.
Tom would say that he knew within the first few minutes of meeting Thomas that he wanted to hire him. He would brag that his winemaker was an English major while in college who had never gone to school for enology. “He’s self-taught!” he would say as he slid a glass of GTS to you across the table. He gave Thomas only one directive when they agreed to work together; make the best wine you can from this vineyard.
Originally from Sumter, South Carolina, Thomas developed an interest in wine while at the University of Virginia. After moving to the Napa Valley, he expanded his knowledge of wines from all the world's great regions while working at All Seasons Wine Shop in Calistoga, CA. Thomas began making wine in the late 1990s and today makes some of the most sought-after wines to come out of the region. With a singular intuitive sense of balance and patience, he crafts beautiful wines that speak of the land and the conditions that created them. As testament to this, in October 2008, Thomas made history as the youngest winemaker to score not just one, but two perfect "100 point" scores from Robert M. Parker, The Wine Advocate. When asked how he defines great wine, Thomas responds, "I can't really define it, but I know it when I taste it."
Barbour Vineyards Vineyard Manager
When the Seavers cleared the south-facing hill on their property to make room for a vineyard there was some question in Tom’s mind about what grape to cultivate. Passionate about Napa Zinfandels, Tom asked his newly hired vineyard manager, Jim Barbour, if they could plant the varietal in his newly developed three acres site. In a story that was told repeatedly over the course of their 18 year friendship, and often elicited belly-laughs from both men, Jim patiently explained that you do not plant anything but Cabernet on Diamond Mountain. “Rookie mistake” Tom would say, shrugging his shoulders. Cabernet it was.
Founded in 1990 by Jim Barbour, Barbour Vineyards LLC is one of Napa Valley’s leading vineyard management and development companies. Barbour Vineyards’ clients include producers of some of the Valley’s most sought-after wines and owners of the most highly respected vineyards. Jim approaches each vineyard and block within a vineyard individually, determining which grape varieties, clones, rootstocks, and farming methods will make the best wines and best express the characteristics of the site. Together with his partners, Nate George and Jesus Rios, the Barbour Vineyards team work hand-in-hand with Napa's top winemakers to create Napa Valley’s renown wines.
Anne Seaver Chief Financial Officer
Anne is the CFO of Seaver Vineyards and Tom and Nancy’s youngest daughter. She has worked at Seaver Vineyards for eight years and during that time was lovingly called “Girl Friday” because she did anything and everything we needed - not least of which was managing the business accounting while also making sure everyone on staff was fed and watered. As CFO, she manages all aspects of the financial side of Seaver Vineyards while still continuing to do it all. If you interact with us on social media, it is most likely Anne that you will communicate with and by night, Anne is the owner of Hot Yoga Calistoga (now in its sixth year). An avid collector of animals, her current menagerie consists of three rescue Pit Bulls and two parrots.
Karen Seaver Chief Operating Officer
Karen started working for Seaver Vineyards in 2009 after a weekend social visit with Tom and Nancy (Karen is married to their nephew, Arlo) turned into a working visit. Conversations over dinner about wine orders and shipping led to weekly conversations about business systems and strategies and the rest is history. Karen is originally from Massachusetts and is a Boston University graduate with a diverse professional background that has led to small business management and consulting. Karen manages Seaver Vineyards' operations, including all of our sales and marketing, and if you call or email us it’s Karen you will speak to. But, truth be told, she would spend all of her time out in the vineyard if she could.
